Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin: DACA Under Attack

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin warned the immigrants that the DACA is now under attack. DACA, which is an acronym that means Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is now under fire. The Republican Party wanted to stop the program signed into law by President Barack Obama, claiming that it only contributes to the increasing number of illegal immigrants inside the United States. DACA grants children who came from overseas without any documentation to study and work in the United States allowed that they entered the United States before they turned 16 years old. The beneficiaries of the DACA program are given a social security number that they can use later on when looking for a job. The status of those who are under the DACA program must be renewed every two years. Aside from the privileges to study and work in the United States, some states are also allowing the DACA beneficiaries to get their driving license.

For years after it has been signed into law, DACA protected thousands of youths from automatic deportation. However, the privilege of not getting deported would end soon, claimed by the Republican Party, as they are trying to stop the program’s implementation. Because of the plans by the Republican Party, youths who are enjoying the benefits of DACA are advised not to renew their status and keep a low profile to avoid being deported once their status expired. Children who are not under the DACA program and has plans to apply for the status should also reconsider their decision, because of the issue surrounding the matter. It is better for them to stay silent about their immigrant status rather than putting themselves in jeopardy.

Human rights groups and organizations staged a nationwide rally after the news about the planned scrapping of DACA arose. They stated that the Republican Party has no rights in dismantling DACA, and they should stop deporting those who are contributing a lot to the American society. Migrants’ rights activists are saying that the DACA program has raised a generation of smart people who are excelling in different fields and are paying their taxes. More than 800,000 individuals are projected to be affected by the government’s harsh policies against undocumented migrants. The migrant rights activists are warning about a significant economic blow if the deportation of the DACA beneficiaries would ensue.

Ken Paxton, who currently serves as the Texas Attorney General, is the mind behind the plan of dismantling DACA. He sent a letter to President Donald J. Trump, saying that the DACA program produced a generation of illegal immigrants and they have to be deported as soon as possible. The president was also threatened by Ken Paxton, claiming that legal actions would take place if the president would not be compliant.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, who are strong supporters of the DACA Program, plead the government to change its decision. The two activists have been helping illegal migrants to find a place to stay in America and helping them to get employed using their private fund called the Frontera Fund.
